Main Purpose/Scope:

Reporting to the Manager, the Activity Coordinator coordinates and implements programs and activities for residents. This position also recruits and oversees volunteers to assist in the enhancement of programs and activities.

 Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop programs that contribute to the intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of residents
  • Develop programs based on the interests and abilities of residents which offer broad appeal and encourage participation
  • Deliver programs in a caring, courteous, and respectful manner
  • Plan and organize entertainment activities
  • Plan and organize a variety of activities which may include, but are not limited to:
    • Crafts, games, and hobbies
    • Music, drama, and dance
    • Outdoor recreation and horticulture
    • Indoor and outdoor sports, fitness, and other physical activities
    • Mentally stimulating activities such as literary discussions and readings, debate forums, educational seminars, etc.
  • Plan and organize a variety of resident excursions, which may include outings such as:
    • visits to museums or other historical sites of interest
    • picnics at local parks
    • trips to theatres, music events, etc.
    • visits to other Foundation sites for combined activities or excursions
    • shopping
  • Drive the Foundation bus for resident outings
  • Set up and dismantle materials and furniture for activities
  • Lead exercises
  • Develop and maintain a volunteer base by recruiting, training, and overseeing volunteers
  • Assist the Manager with resident meetings, including organizing and attending meetings and taking notes
  • Organize fundraising activities as required
  • Organize the monthly activity calendar and resident newsletter items and submit for publication within established timeframe
  • Preserve and protect the confidentiality of any information, either personal or medical, acquired through contact with residents
  • Assist with Medication Assistance Program as required
  • Other duties as required

 Job Specifications:

 Education/Training:

  • Purposeful Movement training
  • WHMIS training
  • Theraputic Recreation diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution

 Experience:

  • Minimum of two years' experience in related recreational field preferred

 Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Basic knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office Suite software, and internet
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to deal with residents and their families, co-workers, and volunteers in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Confident in making quick decisions in emergency situations
  • Ability to manage situations appropriately with confidentiality, tact, and sensitivity
  • Ability to multi-task while working in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work effectively independently or within a team
  • A flexible, willing, and positive attitude
  • Above average listening skills

 Requirements:

  • Available to work flexible hours
  • Complete work-related training as required
  • Support and adhere to all current and future Foundation policies and procedures
  • Support and adhere to all federal and provincial legislation as it applies to the Foundation including, but not limited to, Alberta Housing Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy, Protection for Persons in Care Act, Occupational Health and Safety, and WHMIS
  • Uphold all applicable standards including, but not limited to, Supportive Living Accommodation Standards and Continuing Care Health Service Standards (where applicable)
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings
  • Ensure compliance with dress and grooming policy to project and maintain a professional image
  • Mobility to work in multi-storey building and physical stamina to lift and carry up to 25 kg.
  • Fitness level sufficient to set up and lead activities and exercises

 Specific Requirements:

  • Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Class 4 driver's license
  • Current satisfactory driver's abstract
  • Current claims experience letter
  • Emergency First Aid
