Main Purpose/Scope:

Working under the guidance of a Cook I, Food Services Supervisor, and/or Manager, Cook II employees assist with the preparation of meals, maintaining kitchen organization and cleanliness in a smooth and efficient manner, safe food handling, and inventory control.

 Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist with the planning, preparation, and production of appetizing, tasty, and nutritious food appropriate for seniors within the following organizational guidelines:
    • follow the six-week cyclical menu plan, while creatively varying protein component
    • prepare meals and snacks from scratch using as little processed/prepared food as possible
    • emphasize appealing presentation
    • determine appropriate substitutions to comply with Canada Food Guide requirements
    • ensure preparation of adequate meal quantities
    • ensure appropriate meal portions are served
  • Assume responsibility for meal preparation as above in the absence of Cook I or Food Services Supervisor
  • Keep kitchen clean following provincial Food Safety standards
  • Assist with proper rotation of food stock
  • Ensure proper storage of food supplies according to provincial health standards
  • Assist with the Medication Assistance Program as required
  • Respond to emergency calls as required
  • Complete necessary documentation as required
  • Support and adhere to all safe food handling practices
  • Assist with serving and cleanup in the dining room as required
  • Other duties as required

 Job Specifications:


  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Provincial certification in food safety and hygiene
  • Standard First Aid certification (except SL4 sites)
  • WHMIS training


  • Minimum three years' cooking experience
  • Bulk cooking experience preferred


  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English
  • Ability to multi-task while working in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively independently or within a team
  • Above average listening skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to deal with seniors and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Confident in making quick decisions in emergency situations
  • Ability to use all kitchen equipment in a safe and competent manner
  • A flexible, willing, and positive attitude
  • High safety and hygiene standards
  • Basic computer knowledge for completing internet orders considered an asset


  • Complete work-related training as required
  • Support and adhere to all current and future Foundation policies and procedures
  • Support and adhere to all federal and provincial legislation as it applies to the Foundation including, but not limited to, Alberta Housing Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy, Protection for Persons in Care Act, Occupational Health and Safety, and WHMIS
  • Uphold all applicable standards including, but not limited to, Supportive Living Accommodation Standards and Continuing Care Health Service Standards
  • Participate and take an active role in the Occupational Health and Safety Committee and Hazard Assessment reviews as required
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings
  • Follow facility evacuation policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with dress and grooming policy to project and maintain a professional image
  • Mobility to work in multi-storey building and physical stamina to lift and carry up to 25 kg.
