Note: This position is a part of the Summer Temporary Employment Placement Program (STEP) offered by the government of Alberta, and therefore only students who are returning to school in the fall will be considered.

This position will begin early May and run for 16 weeks, thus ending in late August.

Main Purpose/Scope:

Reporting to the Manager, the Labourer is responsible for performing manual labour, grounds keeping, and caretaking duties throughout the premises.

 Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Cut and trim grass, bushes, and trees
  • Water grass, bushes, and trees
  • Pull weeds
  • Plant annuals and/or perennials
  • Trim and pick flowers and clean landscaping and flower beds
  • Clean floors and carpets
  • Exterior painting
  • Wash windows
  • Snow removal
  • Clean Foundation vehicles and buses as scheduled and/or required
  • Dispose of garbage and/or recycling material as required
  • Gather and remove litter
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, planters, and other grounds features
  • Put inventory in proper storage as required
  • Other duties as required

 Job Specifications:


  • Previous grounds keeping experience an asset


  • WHMIS training


  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Confident in making quick decisions in emergency situations
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to follow and carry out direction well

  • Ability to operate grounds keeping equipment
  • Ability to use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hedge trimmers
  • Ability to use snow removal equipment

  • Ability to multi-task in ever-changing environment


  • Complete work-related training as required
  • Support and adhere to all current and future Foundation policies and procedures
  • Support and adhere to all federal and provincial legislation as it applies to the Foundation including, but not limited to, Alberta Housing Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy, Protection for Persons in Care Act, Occupational Health and Safety, and WHMIS
  • Uphold all applicable standards including, but not limited to, Supportive Living Accommodation Standards and Continuing Care Health Service Standards
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings
  • Ensure compliance with dress and grooming policy to project and maintain a professional image
  • Mobility to work in multi-storey building and physical stamina to lift and carry up to 25 kg.
  • Physical ability to climb and work from a ladder
  • Physical ability to manoeuvre floor and/or carpet cleaning equipment

 Specific Requirements:

  • Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Current satisfactory driver's abstract
  • Current claims experience letter
