Main Purpose/Scope:

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Building Caretaker performs manual maintenance, repair work, and general labour duties on the assigned facilities and premises.  

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Perform minor electrical, plumbing, painting, and general building repairs and maintenance as required
  • Perform miscellaneous handyman tasks as required throughout the facility
  • Assist with maintenance and cleaning of common areas (washrooms, kitchens, laundry room, etc.)
  • Transport extraneous materials for elimination to appropriate sites
  • Handle emergency situations as they arise and be cognizant of, and comfortable with, the emergency procedures of the building, including assisting with the evacuation of residents
  • Keep the Manager, or designate informed of any repair issues
  • Perform landscaping, grounds keeping, and exterior site duties as required
  • Ensure maintenance areas are kept clean, organized, and hazard-free
  • Other duties as required

  • Ability to use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hedge trimmers
  • Ability to use snow removal equipment
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to deal with seniors, trades people, and co-workers in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Ability to multi-task in ever-changing environment

 Requirements:

  • Complete work-related training as required
  • Support and adhere to all current and future Foundation policies and procedures
  • Support and adhere to all federal and provincial legislation as it applies to the Foundation including, but not limited to, Alberta Housing Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy, Protection for Persons in Care Act, Occupational Health and Safety, and WHMIS
  • Uphold all applicable standards including, but not limited to, Supportive Living Accommodation Standards and Continuing Care Health Service Standards
  • Mobility to work in multi-storey building and physical stamina to lift and carry up to 25 kg.
  • Physical ability to climb and work from a ladder
  • Physical ability to manoeuvre floor and/or carpet cleaning equipment

 Specific Requirements:

  • Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Current satisfactory driver's abstract
  • Current claims experience letter
